American Philanthropy has been lacking diversity for years, and recent data from the Council on Foundations Grantmaker’s Salary and Benefits research shows that this has not changed much. While 36% of the population is represented by racial and ethnic minorities, only 16% of foundation board members are considered ethnic or racial minorities, and only 24% of full-time grantmaker employees are minorities. Here is a further breakdown of the data on minority representation: 16% Hispanic, 12% black, 5% Asian and Pacific Islander, and 64% non-Hispanic white. The Council on Foundations and various affinity groups have put forth recommendations to expand the pool of leadership to encourage further representation of women and ethnic and racial minorities.
