“People of color stand poised to become the electoral majority in the most powerful nation the world has ever known. From an environmental perspective, they are already a super-majority — accounting for the margin of victory of almost every elected official willing to take a stand on global warming. The future of our planet is inexorably tied to the actions we, as Americans, take on global warming, and the future of those actions is inexorably tied to mobilizing activists and voters of color in favor of immediate and pressing action…This is the challenge of the present for the US environmental movement, and it is in this spirit that the Green Leadership Trust offers the following guidance to align the performance of our leader towards equity and inclusion aimed at building the power we need to win.”
This tool was created after a decision at the March 2019 Steering Committee meeting, and the 1st draft came together in April. We then presented it to our membership at the retreat on May 2-4, incorporated feedback and shared it with the Green Group CEOs on May 30th. After another round of edits and feedback, we share with you this final version.
We consider this a “living document“, and hope that as it hits the real world and the hard work of implementation begins, we can continue to refine it and improve upon it. While our staff will focus our energies on serving our membership as they implement this tool in their organizations, we want to share this with all people in our network and would love to hear if you’ll use it, how you’re using it, and how we can help.
By the end of the year, we will have our first cohort of adopters in time for the critical work ahead in 2020.
